    Celebration of Life

Earlier this month, Austin's queer and kink and bear communities lost a good one. Former Chain Drive bartender Garold Bates, who later made a home behind the Iron Bear bar, passed away. Raise a shot of $2 peppermint schnapps (his shot of choice) in his honor and help raise some money to pay off the bills he left behind.

    :

Garold was a cherished member of the qmmunity. In fact, the Chronicle was one of his many fans and in 2012 we awarded him a Best of Austin for being the very best LGBTQ bartender in town. Former "Gay Place" contributor Robbie Cohen wrote a poem in Garold's honor:

    :

    over the oil slick rainbows

    :

    of chain drive

    :

there is a light that never goes out

    :

a roman candle smile burns bright

    :

    perpetually refracting

    :

    kaleidoscopic love

    :

    welcoming me back into night

    :

    i love you garold bates

    Sat., Aug. 25, 5pm-2am. Free.
