Austin's New Year
The official city celebration is family-friendly and will feature live performances by El Combo Oscuro, Taméca Jones, the Texas Gentlemen, and Extragrams. Guests can choose from 10 food trucks, including Burro Cheese Kitchen, Amy’s Ice Cream, Garbo's Lobster, and Shawarma Point. A dynamic fireworks display at midnight will ring in 2023 with style. The lawn opens at 6pm, and guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs. Holiday Tree Recycling
For city of Austin curbside customers, recycling a holiday tree is as easy as setting it at the curb by 5:30am on the regularly scheduled compost collection day. Trees that are 6 feet or taller must be cut in half. Everyone is welcome to drop off their trees at Zilker on one of three collection days: Sat., Dec. 31; Sat., Jan. 7; or Sun., Jan. 8, 10am-2pm. Volunteers are also needed for those days, if you're still in the giving spirit! Trees collected at Zilker will be turned into mulch and available for free on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Jan. 12, 9am. NYE: the Last Dance at the COCO Complex w/ Peligrosa, the Brothers Groove, Cyber Queen, Rue & Soullareal
Fourth Street’s double-decked Coconut Club is the closest Austin gets to an adult playhouse. The winding complex of four vibrant spaces, however, has been sold to incoming developers, who are poaching the lot for a 40-level high-rise. As historic landmark status was ultimately denied for the block’s stretch of LGBTQIA nightlife, Coco’s NYE programming doubles as a hello and a goodbye, bolstered by a bill of DJ mainstays. Y2K’s Cyber Queen showcase helms the electric Neon Grotto, while Afro-beat and funk command the Laser Pit via the Brothers Groove. Downstairs, Cuatro Gato hosts all-star spinners Rue and Soularreal, while long standing collective Peligrosa inject bass into Latin folk on the rooftop. Though the $20 all-access event is branded as Coco’s last dance, the club has yet to announce a closing date.
