Beatles Full Moon Concert in the Dark
On the April Full Moon, come set intentions and indulge in the mesmerizing allure of live acoustic music performed by world-class musicians, surrounded by the warm glow of candlelight. ABC Kite Fest
One of our most iconic traditions returns for its 92nd year as a citywide celebration of Austin’s parks in partnership with Austin Parks Foundation, benefiting Communities in Schools and the Moss Pieratt Foundation. Sponsored in part by KXAN and Texas Mutual, this year’s ABC Kite Fest encourages Austinites to get outside and fly a kite at their neighborhood park while observing COVID precautions, then share photos and videos on social media. Highlights include the Exchange Club Community Kite Contest; a virtual MossFest concert featuring Tiarra Girls, Terri Hendrix, Barton Hills Choir, Mr. Will, and others; and the H-E-B Pet Zone, an off-leash pet playground pop-up at Zilker Park. Golden Hornet: String Quartet Smackdown
The seventh annual String Quartet Smackdown is this very weekend, streaming live from Alamo Drafthouse on Demand, where you can watch 16 composers from around the world duke it out in an NCAA basketball-style tournament. Northern-Southern: Baton
This is a group show by relay, begun in July of 2020 as a method of socially distancing a community in the height of the pandemic: Artists took turns alone in the space, each adding to the exhibition. Now, as it nears its close, the exhibition resembles a community in which work converses and overlaps. Performance Screening: VAC South Lawn
Madeline Hollander's Score for Seven Solos revisits a project she first realized in 2017: A selection of retired AFD fire hoses extended across UTVAC's gallery floor, assuming a new function as a site-responsive choreographic score awaiting interpretation. Then, a group of student dancers responded to the repurposed objects through improvisational movements. The deadline to register to vote in the May 1 special election is Thursday, April 1. If you're not yet registered to vote (find out at www.votetravis.com), you may download a voter registration form at www.votetexas.gov/register, print it, and then either mail it to the county voter registrar (Travis County Voter Registration, PO Box 149327, Austin, Texas 78714-9327) or drop it off at the Travis County Tax Office (5501 Airport Blvd.). You can register to vote in person at the Travis County Tax Office, too. This portion of UT's annual New Theatre project is a virtual retelling of the tale(s) of la cucaracha. Activating the cockroach as a time-traveling hemispheric avatar, this practice interweaves stories of self-metamorphosis, resistance, and revolution to explore "how attuning to a theoretical brown commons might expand possibilities of freedom."
