Willie Watson

Every artist toting an acoustic guitar thirsts for recognition as a songwriter, but Willie Watson increasingly embraces folksinger purity. Since dropping out of Old Crow Medicine Show in 2011, the New York native has solely recorded traditional material. September’s Dave Rawlings-produced Folksinger Vol. 2 finds Watson channeling Reverend Gary Davis’ ragtime-influenced guitar picking on “Samson and Delilah” and laying his golden tenor and agile old-timey banjo on heavenly old spiritual “Dry Bones.” – Kevin Curtin
