Why? plays Alopecia, Lala Lala [outside]

Cincinnati cynic Yoni Wolf commits to his lyrical self-flagellation harder on this album than any other in the Why? discography. The 10-year reissue of the band’s biggest album brims with obscure poetic devices and the frontman rapper’s signature dry self-deprecation, all over ambitious, hypnotic, jigsaw-like melodies. Alopecia is a time capsule of a younger, brutally insecure Midwesterner with more edge than U2. Chicago’s grungy Lala Lala opens. – Hannah Wisterman
