Kota the Friend, Blackillac

Cali sound grounded by NYC instincts, Kota the Friend’s Brooklyn roots sprout like palm trees on his breezy, slow-burning raps. Snapping at times like Joey Badass or Mos Def, KTF’s at his best riding breezy instrumentation, oscillating between raspy raps and slippery falsettos like he’s Kendrick Lamar cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway. Locals Blackillac boast raw Southern rap behind Gary Clark Jr.’s smooth hip-hop production. – Jeremy Steinberger
