John Wesley Coleman III, The Early Stages, Local Shadows, Baby Robots

John Wesley Coleman III balances songwriterly charm with ragged, DIY edges throughout a prolific catalog of jaunty rock and cowpunk. The precarious practice continues on Cuckoo Bird Sings a Song, borrowing backing from Milwaukee indie act Jaill. High-density art shredders the Early Stages contribute jangly New Wave alongside newly assembled Austin rock crew Local Shadows. Baby Robots, masterminded by Bobby Baker, revisit their 1997-launched outsider psychedelia in a whopping retrospective, 20 Years and Beers. – Rachel Rascoe
