In a 2009 commencement address at the University of Tennessee, Dolly Parton considered what she wanted people to say about her 100 years from now: “I want them to say, ‘Dang, don’t she look good for her age?’”
A decade later, the Volunteer State native still turns heads at the ripe age of 73. Austin holds dueling musical tributes for the Backwoods Barbie’s birthday on Saturday. South Austin nonprofit the High Road on Dawson wigs up for a fifth annual bash at its luxurious headquarters, featuring performances from Stephanie Bergara, Lindsay Beaver, Caroline Casey, Teri Joyce, Ted Roddy, and more. The event raises dough for a local chapter of Dolly’s Imagination Library, which mails free monthly books to children.
“Right now, we cover four ZIP codes and hope to add four more with the funds we raise at the bash,” says High Road’s VP of Charity Events Jen Philhower.
Simultaneously, Barracuda hosts the cleverly titled “Cup of Ambition,” featuring 23 stars of Austin music covering DP classics and deep cuts including White Denim’s James Petralli, David Ramirez, Jackie Venson, Robert Ellis, Carson McHone, Kalu James, and Mélat. Proceeds go to homelessness charity Front Steps.– Kevin Curtin
