Keeled Scales showcase w/ Jordan Moser, Karima Walker, Will Johnson

Over nearly a decade, local imprint Keeled Scales has built a roster of provocative and eclectic songwriters, championing an emphasis on emotionally impactful artists who find power in the quietest crevices. The Cactus hosts three of the label’s best, with Will Johnson headlining behind the indie troubadour’s post-Centro-Matic solo releases Wire Mountain and El Capitan, two harrowing yet gorgeous platters. Karima Walker floats in from Tucson with 2001’s Waking the Dreaming Body, looping patient songscapes unfolded in hushed tones, while ATX’s Jordan Moser winds with tender melodies through the Long Night.

A Giant Dog, Blue Jean Queen, Geranium Drive

Look no further for glam rock gravitas than A Giant Dog, where fiery, electric showmanship from guitarists Andrew Cashen and Andy Bauer fuses with Sabrina Ellis’ piercing howl. Originals boast irreverent humor – “Photograph” revels in a comfortable relationship marked lovingly by saggy tits and pants you’ve split – while latest “Suddenly Seymour” rests the Little Shop of Horrors classic on a fuzzy slab of feedback. On night one, they’re joined by pop country singer Blue Jean Queen and psychedelic quartet Geranium Drive, while cheeky TV’s Daniel and indie rockers Nevil and Hot Cakes make for an eclectic second evening.
