Tomar & the FCs album release w/ Stax Records tribute

Given the local mainstreaming of Tomar Williams’ classic R&B authenticity, his quintet’s second album Rise Above arrives long overdue. The funky, percussive title track follows up lead single “Innocence” with its soulful singer imploring others to come together. The party begins with a Stax Records tribute featuring Kevin Russell, the Watters, Sheree Smith, and more.

    C.W. Stoneking

Growing up in Australia, C.W. Stoneking credits his fascination with early American roots styles to a found cassette of midcentury Texas blues. Now settled in Nashville, he’s honed 2008’s provocative King Hokum into a mix of early jazz, jug band country, and touches of rock & roll, with latest LP Gon’ Boogaloo sounding like a stroll across New Orleans. John Schooley’s Rocket 808 stomps first.

Doom Forge Day w/ Thunderkief, Bridge Farmers, Monte Luna

Stouts and porters, super dark guest beers, and even pitch black coffee lubricate a metallic free-for-all at farmhouse brewery Jester King’s 165 acres. Corpse face-painting, smithing, and live tattooing sideshow acid doom duo Monte Luna (2pm), psychedelic THC semi the Bridge Farmers (3:15), and “tune lower play slower” sludge lords Thunderkief (4:30). “Last year’s event brought our biggest [annual] attendance,” emails tasting room manager Brian Murray.
