Delta Spirit called hiatus while riding their biggest success, 2014’s fourth LP Into the Wide. Yet after a decade of helping forge the indie Americana boom, and bristling against its mainstream expectations, the quintet needed a break to refocus creatively. “Every record we made, the camp surrounding us was like, ‘Here it is, this is going to happen, your life is going to change,” and we’d been doing that since we were 19,” laughs Matthew Logan Vasquez, who relocated to Wimberley with the split. “If we kept going and put out a record in 2017, it would’ve been with a big chip on our shoulder, and we didn’t want to do that. We wanted to make a record that we were truly passionate about, and ultimately, I wanted to take a break from playing the big music industry game.” New Year’s Eve in Austin marks Delta Spirit’s first official show in four years as they prepare for a spring tour. With members now spread across North America and involved in other projects, the regrouping took almost a year to coordinate. “All of our attitudes are set to a goal again and that’s been incredibly fun, though logistically crazy,” attests Vasquez. “Everybody’s become a better musician by playing with and producing other folks. And I’ve gotten to do other projects like Glorietta and get involved in the Austin music community. “Things are little bit easier now that all my chips aren’t solely in Delta Spirit, and I think that’s the case with everyone else,” he continues. “We’re creative beings and can live our lives by feeding that creative thing elsewhere, but now, we can also bring it back to this thing that means so much to us.”
