Moist Flesh (album release), Yellow Rose

Johnny Hilbun’s vocals in Moist Flesh glide romantically from Orbison-esque noir serenades to dosed No Wave spasms throughout debut LP Total Erosion of Meaning, partially recorded and mixed by Austin’s late Seth Gibbs. Guitarist Hilbun, a Coma in Algiers alum, is joined by Julia Hungerford on drums, while multi-instrumentalist-composer Marcus Maurice Rubio adds strings, brass, and keys. Like-minded lysergic country balladeers Yellow Rose open.

    Pedro the Lion, Mewithoutyou [outside]

Since the turn of the century, both Pedro the Lion and Mewithoutyou have wrestled with spirituality. Philadelphia’s latter act functions as experimental emo helmed by Aaron Weiss’ impassioned, sermon-like vocals and existentialism. In the former, Seattle’s David Bazan’s thoughtful songwriting and even-keeled coo skews more personal. He revived his beloved moniker in 2017 after a 12-year hiatus.

B.J. Schindler benefit w/ Riverboat Gamblers, Gentlemen Rogues

On May 10, BJ Schindler – a huge, kind presence on Austin’s punk/garage scene, predominantly the bassist in glam punks Eastside Suicides – took his own life. Besides the band, he is also survived by a wife and child. The Parlor’s popular Saturday matinee fundraises by staging the only local appearance this summer by preeminent ATX punks the Riverboat Gamblers alongside Gentlemen Rogues.
