    Flatbush Zombies, Kirk Knight, Nyck Caution

    Jamaican-blooded Brooklyn trio Flatbush Zombies first bonded over Dragon Ball Z and later over their love of psychedelics and rhyming. The intense hip-hop trio blew out of their namesake borough in 2012 with viral clip “Thug Waffle” and remain insularly focused on gritty NYC themes. 2018’s sophomore studio effort Vacation in Hell tributes New York boom-bap gods while often falling into muddled shallowness.

    Power Trip, Sheer Mag, Red Death, Obedience [outdoor]

    Last November’s Sound on Sound makeup show at Mohawk found Dallas thrashers Power Trip holding their own against death metal kings Cannibal Corpse. Stopgap after heralded sophomore full-length Nightmare Logic, April’s digital compendium Opening Fire: 2008-2014 fuels this jag with Philly rockers Sheer Mag, who also boasted a breakout 2017 with debut LP Need to Feel Your Love, classic rock played in a garage.
