    Robert Ellis, Adriel Denae

Iconoclast Robert Ellis redirects at every turn even as his reedy twang and jazz-touched guitar phrasings have become hallmark. Since the roving Texas troubadour’s exquisite fourth LP two years ago, he’s chalked an album of John Hartford duets with Courtney Hartman, Dear John, and joined indie-country supergroup Traveller. Equally multi-faceted artist Adriel Denae opens both nights inside with intoxicating, Norah Jones-styled vocals.

Texas 1989: Geto Boys get bloody paranoid with “Mind of a Lunatic.” One-thousand miles away in Detroit, 16-year-old Esham Smith simultaneously mints violent, bloodstained, mental “acid rap” on Boomin’ Words From Hell. The Motor City’s prolific evil genius has released 16 albums since then, most recently February’s frosty Dead of Winter, which leaves lyrical bloodstains in the snow.
