Free Week: Riverboat Gamblers, American Sharks, Eagle Claw, Billy King & the Bad Bad Bad

Even if winter blows a frozen trail across Austin this evening, Denton’s transplanted kings of Detroit punk mania, the Riverboat Gamblers, preside over a bill torrid enough to set Barracuda’s indoor stage aflame. American Sharks ply Ramones-tempo stoner sludge, while Eagle Claw offers instro-metal akin to vintage Iron Maiden.

Free Week: Whiskey Shivers, Sailor Poon, Booher, Poly Action [Garage]; Holy Knives/Levees, Otis the Destroyer, Megafauna, Hard Riffs [Control Room]

Fresh from Hollywood, where their bare feet muddied the red carpet premiere of Pitch Perfect 3, a Glee-style musical comedy heavily featuring them as a band called Saddle Up, Whiskey Shivers haul high-energy acoustic pop, red-blooded bluegrass, and folk weirdness. Also on deck: feminist terrorists Sailor Poon, indie song craftsman (Michael) Booher, and eclectic power-pop trio Poly Action.

Free Week: Wood & Wire, the Deer, Buck Meek, Middlespoon

Wood & Wire has quietly ascended to Austin’s top traditional string band. The bluegrass quartet toured heavily following 2015 breakout LP The Coast, casting high lonesome wails and strings bending from Appalachian hollers to the Texas Hill Country. Atmospheric roots quintet the Deer revels in Tempest & Rapture to the sparse, otherworldly ballads of Big Thief guitarist Buck Meek in opening, while electronic disco-glam duo Middlespoon kicks off with a dance party.

    Free Week: Jackie Venson

Blues guitarist Jackie Venson took the proverbial leap forward with her latest EP, the immediate and diverse Transcends. Meanwhile, coming off international dates, R&B/pop one-man-band Mobley was recently awarded a grant from music nonprofit Black Fret. Hip-hop outfit Magna Carda is still riding high through the jazzy romance of Somewhere Between, a focused EP successfully shuttling between live play and low-key beats.

Amplified Heat, Duel, Greenbeard, Tia Carrera, Crimson Devils

Let’s make metal soup. Psych blues from Ortiz brothers Jim, Gian, and Chris of Amplified Heat will be the final touch after stoner ingredients from Duel’s Tom Frank, Shaun Avants, JD Shadowz, and Jeff Henson. Add in desert sludge from Greenbeard’s Chance Parker, Jeff Klein, and frontman Buddy Hachar. Sprinkle improvisational “sex metal” from Tia Carrera’s Erik Conn, Jamey R. Simms, and shredder Jason Morales. Ladle heavy bass from Crimson Devils Jake Unruh, Jason Soules, Patrick Pascucci, and Curt Christenson. Serve.
