  • Beatles Full Moon Concert in the Dark

    On the April Full Moon, come set intentions and indulge in the mesmerizing allure of live acoustic music performed by world-class musicians, surrounded by the warm glow of candlelight. Its a different kind of concert, that begins and ends in darkness, with music and a poem or two surrounding and soothing you. Audience members will be given the choice of bringing their own yoga mats and/or pillows to gaze at the shadows on the ceiling. A circle of chairs will be provided.

    This weekend the Arboretum is supercharging its already prodigious shopportunities with a splendid splurge of visual art and related activities. (Yes, the powerhouse Ao5 Gallery recently relocated to this retail wonderland; don't think it's mere coincidence.) Juliet Italian Kitchen's got live painting going on, there's a caricaturist at Sugarboo, an ArtUs Co market of well-wrought cynosures, pet portraits happening at Ao5, live music on the lawn, typewriter poetry among the elegant eateries, and more.

    Beto & the Fairlanes

    One of Austin’s longest running Latin jazz groups observes their 45th birthday this year, so they’ve partnered with the Texas Jazz Society to celebrate. Pianist/writer Robert “Beto” Skiles has been a fixture of ATX music for decades, premiering classical compositions, ballet scores, and more, alongside his leadership of one of the city’s ultimate party bands. It’s easy for this town to take its veterans for granted, so now is a good time to give the Fairlanes the kudos they deserve. The show will also stream live. No word on cake, but good, swinging, dance-happy times are assured.

    Inversion's treble chorus, Da Capo, explores the passions and seasons of life at this in-person concert, featuring works by Ola Gjeilo and R. Murray Shafer; in-house composers Trevor Shaw, Adrienne Inglis, and Joshua Chai; and Cole Reyes, winner of Inversion's emerging composer contest.

    This re-imagined version of the musical Mack & Mabel exposes the destructive, co-dependent relationship between great Hollywood comic director Mack Sennett and the brilliant young star of his early "two-reelers," Mabel Normand. The show features Sebastian Vitale as Mack, Sarah-Marie Curry(!) as Mabel, Katya Welch as Lottie Ames, and Noah Steele as Frank Wyman. Directed by Michael Cooper for Alchemy Theatre.

    Ms. Mack & the Daddies

    The honorific “Ms.,” to me, implies an air of warm matriarchal authority. Fitting for the titular Ms. Mack, whose gravitational stage presence demands you listen up. The charismatic vocalist – fronting the five year running universalist funk-soul unit known especially to patrons of the Skylark Lounge and Sagebrush – belts big, but also sinks into the grooves, leaving room-to-move for her “Daddies.” The horn-inflected group’s sound anchors upon the body-moving bass of Lauren Michelle, over which Charles Hunter’s keys and Leland Isley’s guitar work shines. A perfect fit for a church night get-down at Antone’s.
