Chan Is Missing

1982, 80 min. Directed by Wayne Wang. Starring Wood Moy, Marc Hayashi and Laureen Chew.

Jewels in the Wasteland: Wang's first feature film flipped the Charlie Chan character – a fictional Asian police detective created by novelist Earl Derr Biggers often portrayed by actors in yellowface – on its head with its depiction of Chan as a missing person being tracked down by two San Francisco cab drivers after he disappears with their money. Followed by a post-screening audience discussion with Richard Linklater and filmmaker & author John Pierson.
