This bare-bones horror film mines a maximum amount of material from its generic sources. Basically a story about four young people whose car breaks down in the boondocks and the wretched things that befall them while first seeking help, and then escape, The Roost takes the hoary formula and runs wild with it. As soon as the first flying bat hits their windshield, it follows that the shit will hit the proverbial fan soon thereafter. Skillfully filmed and performed, West's film (which screened during the SXSW Film Festival) also carries the downtown imprimatur of a Larry Fessenden production.
