The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter (1980) and “Chimps: So Like Us”

Not rated, 60 min. Directed by Connie Field.

REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Tue., Nov. 19, 2002

An exceptional documentary, The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter (60 min.) looks at the role of women on the homefront during WWII. The film's emphasis is not so much on women's ability to perform work ordinarily done by men as it is on the mechanics of ideology and how ideas can be shaped to suit the needs of history. "Chimps: So Like Us" (1991, 29 min.) is a short directed by Jane Goodall, Karen Goodman, and Kirk Simon that documents Goodall's work in Tanzania and argues for simian rights.
