REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Tue., Sept. 24, 2002
Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme will be in Austin to present this benefit screening of his new film, his first narrative feature since 1111's Beloved. Proceeds will benefit the educational and artistic programs of the Kids ’N’ Film program of AFF and AFS. The Truth About Charlie is a mixture of romance and suspense set in modern-day Paris. The movie is a fresh take on Stanley Donen's 1963 film Charade and stars Mark Wahlberg as the mystery man and the exquisite Thandie Newton as the person who must find the missing pieces to make sense of the puzzle that has become her life. The city of Paris is used to optimum advantage and the film includes cameos by the likes of Charles Aznavour, Anna Karina, And Agnes Varda. (See p.xx in this week's Screens section for an interview with Jonathan Demme.)
