The Affair of the Necklace

The Affair of the Necklace

R, 120 min. Directed by Charles Shyer. Starring Brian Cox, Joely Richardson, Christopher Walken, Jonathan Pryce, Adrien Brody, Simon Baker, Hilary Swank.

Not reviewed at press time. Hilary Swank follows up her Oscar-winning performance as the transgendered lead in Boys Don't Cry with a complete about-face. Here she stars in a costume drama set during the waning years of the 18th century -- and the waning years of the French monarchy. Based on an historical footnote, l'affair du collier has long been infamous in Europe as having paved the way for the French Revolution. At the heart of the incident was one determined woman, Jeanne de la Motte-Valois (Swank), whose true motivation was family honor rather than wealth.
