Mad Love

Not rated, 70 min. Directed by Karl Freund. Starring Peter Lorre, Frances Drake, Colin Clive, Ted Healy.

REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Wed., Nov. 17, 1999

Mad Love features Peter Lorre at his finest as a mad scientist to end all mad scientists. When a concert pianist’s hands are crushed in an accident, Lorre performs an operation to replace the musician’s hands with those of a knife thrower. To make matters worse, he falls insanely in love with the pianist’s wife. Director Freund is the noted German cameraman (Metropolis) who turned director. This is also the movie that Pauline Kael bases her arguments on in The Citizen Kane Book. In the book, she claims that Orson Welles heavily borrowed from this Expressionist work during the making of his famed classic.
