    MLK Celebration

    Honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy while uplifting diversity and multiculturalism in Austin. All businesses, non-profit organizations and individuals are invited to march and celebrate. The day kicks off with a short program at the MLK statue at UT, then a march to the south steps of the Capitol for a rally, then a march to the historic Huston-Tillotson University, with a celebration and activities from 11:15am to 3:30pm, including a food drive for Central Texas Food Bank.       Governor's Community Achievement Awards

      The GCAA program has recognized outstanding communities since 1969, with the Texas Department of Transportation providing landscaping award funding since 1985. This year, ten winning communities will share $2 million in landscaping awards from TxDOT, with the amount based on population size. The funds are used for landscaping projects along state rights of way. Applications are now being accepted.

      January Classes at Pioneer Farms

      Start the year learning a new old skill at the historic farm. They've got basic blacksmithing and leatherworking classes all month and you can learn to craft your own custom belt or a knife made from a railroad spike.

      The march will leave from Camacho Elementary at 11:00am and make its way to Old Town Park for a celebration featuring performances from dancers, musicians, choirs, and spoken word artists.

      Honor the spirit and memory of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with host Ebony Stewart and the community onstage. Bring your poetry to share or simply come and witness the free-flowing words of others. Signup begins at 6:30 with the open mic starting at 7.

      Puerto Rican Cultural Center Classes & Call for Dancers

      The PRCC is seeking dancers for upcoming events and will hold auditions Jan. 9 & 16; contact for an appointment. Not a dancer? The center opens Jan. 7 with a full slate of music and dance classes. They'll be teaching parrandas (holiday songs) and new dances in advance of the big Octavitas/Reyes celebration Jan. 22.
