Austin utility customers are targeted by scammers every day, and the city wants everyone to be aware of how to recognize them. Scammers may call from spoofed numbers and request a call back at an 800 number, and may tell you metering equipment needs maintenance or threaten immediate service cutoff. Austin Energy will never ask for sensitive information over the phone or request non-traceable payment like gift cards.
