    AISD Board Public Hearing on Special Education

    On Aug. 30, the Texas Education Agency presented an alternative plan for Austin ISD to consider in place of a possible conservatorship over special education. The board will hear public comment and discuss the options presented by TEA at this meeting; see the board's initial response to the plan online and watch the meeting on AISD.TV.

    Beat the Heat

    With Central Texas experiencing extremely high temperatures, city leaders issued a reminder to be aware of Excessive Heat Watch and Excessive Heat Warning alerts from the National Weather Service. A warning means action should be taken immediately to avoid heat-related illness. The city began a pilot program in July at Republic Square with misting tents and cold bottled water, and always offers facilities like rec centers and libraries as cooling centers. In addition, city pool fees are waived Aug. 9-Sept. 30, except for Barton Springs. Visit the city's website for more information, and always check before you head to an outdoor event: For safety, organizers may cancel events that put people at risk due to the heat.
