The Austin Gem and Mineral Society’s annual gem and mineral show is open to the public and will host over 30 vendors selling gemstones, jewelry, beads, mineral specimens, fossils, crystals and more! AGMS will have youth programs, silent auction and a wide variety of gem and mineral displays on view at the event. Tickets are available at the door.
The city's fourth annual contest is open now for submissions from Austin students ages 10 to 18. In honor of Digital Inclusion Week (Oct. 2-6), young artists are asked to "picture a world where everyone is connected digitally." With Central Texas experiencing extremely high temperatures, city leaders issued a reminder to be aware of Excessive Heat Watch and Excessive Heat Warning alerts from the National Weather Service. A warning means action should be taken immediately to avoid heat-related illness. The city began a pilot program in July at Republic Square with misting tents and cold bottled water, and always offers facilities like rec centers and libraries as cooling centers. In addition, city pool fees are waived Aug. 9-Sept. 30, except for Barton Springs. Austin Community College is now registering for the fall semester, offering more than 100 programs including associate degrees, workforce certificates, and more. ACC offers free support and resources to students like tutoring, advising, and financial guidance. Classes start Aug. 21.
This program from the city of Austin, run by Farmshare Austin, has opened new market locations. There are now six weekly markets around town that sell Texas-grown produce, eggs, honey, and other groceries all at reduced prices.
