    Austin & Travis County Declare Local State of Disaster

    Travis County Judge Andy Brown and Austin Mayor Steve Adler have issued a local state of disaster for both Travis County and the city of Austin in response to severe winter weather conditions. These declarations will last for no more than seven days, until Feb. 21. They urge residents to seek shelter, stay off the roads unless it's an emergency, and conserve energy.     Hollywood’s Sistine Chapel: Sacred Sets for Stage & Screen

    Six hand-painted soundstage backdrops are on exhibit alongside artwork from the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts. The backdrops, on loan from Texas Performing Arts at UT-Austin, were created for MGM’s 1968 papal drama, The Shoes of the Fisherman, starring Anthony Quinn. These six replicas of Renaissance masterpieces in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel were nearly discarded before being rescued in 2017.

    A warming center is open until further notice at the Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Rd., and when Capital Metro is operating, rides are free to anyone seeking transportation to the shelter. Those seeking overnight shelter should go to Palmer Events Center, and families with children may go to the Downtown Salvation Army Shelter at 501 E. Eighth.
