The Latino Comedy Project: Gentrifucked
After sold-out performances from Austin to San Francisco, Emmy-nominated sketch troupe the Latino Comedy Project returns with an encore presentation of their acclaimed show Gentrifucked, once again hilariously attacking the causes and consequences of gentrification as it affects Austin and communities across America. The LCP asks: What happens when a community’s piñata shops are demolished and replaced with cat-friendly vegan coffeehouses? When neighborhood pulgas are transformed overnight into luxury condos? Or when Mexicans are replaced with obsessively dog-walking paddleboard enthusiasts?Through a bright mix of live sketches, music, and original videos, the LCP provides all the hard answers and leaves no one – no one! – unscathed. Ride the Wave
This new play by Mattie Barber-Bockelman is about "three bros searching for an epic surf on the last day of summer." In the multimedia performance, set in a loosely imagined 2060s rich with vibes, grooves, and laughter, a group of young women riff on the surfer bro trope to examine how friendship, the pursuit of freedom, and growing up will be affected by climate catastrophe. Davis Gallery: Bouff! The Big Tease
New work by B. Shawn Cox is always a delight for the eyes (and a few other senses), and here the masterful painter and arch wit brings a bounty of pop philosophy with a tinge of irony (and much big hair) – inspired by lore, social identity narratives, and childhood memories of his West Texas roots. Esther's Follies
Esther's Follies – Austin's not-so-secret weapon in the fight against ennui – the comedy gem that still dazzles this growing urban hub – returns to the weekly live and in-person stage of their club on Dirty Sixth, the whole troupe bringing back old favorites and debuting a new program of hilarity with topical, ripped-from-the-headlines sketches and musical numbers. And you do need a laugh or two, right about this time, don't you, citizen? (And how about a margarita to go with that?)
