Last Sunday at the Austin Music Industry Awards, democracy proved our live club capital to be of sound mind, body, and spirit. Fully documented voters in the Chronicle’s 37-year-old Austin Music Poll chose dead-on anointments like Trish Connelly of Cheer Up Charlies for Best Booker, Sailor Poon captain and visual decimator Billie Buck as Best Poster Artist, and this periodical’s brand-new Music news breaker Rachel Rascoe as Best Music Writer.: Band of the Year, Best New Band, Best Album: Now arrive the marquee honors at the 2018/19 Austin Music Awards.: Whether or not any of this year’s headliners – Black Pumas, Abhi the Nomad, X howler John Doe, Alejandro Escovedo, Tomar Williams, Traygod tha MC, DJ Mel, and dozens of others – take home any plaques remains to be seen, but make no mistake: Those making moves onstage are there because of your wisdom and taste. Every sound, every award, every emcee and guest emcee atop the world-class Moody stage are a result of your judgments, pronouncements, decrees. Imagine if society at large functioned so righteously.: Many hours will tick off in completing the distribution of some 50 awards overall between the AMIAs and the AMAs, all of it interspersed with once-in-a-Lone-Star tributes, one-off collabos, and a special guest who could sell out the venue on their own. Unplanned alchemy, emotion, and wit will flash across the stage and screen and ripple through the tables on the floor and cheap seats in the balcony. For going on four decades now, it’s played out thus.: We pay for event production, but you, Austin, you put on the show.
