Wes Anderson Brings Isle of Dogs to SXSW

Last week, SXSW announced that high-concept horror A Quiet Place is this year's opening night film. Now Wes Anderson's new star-studded canine animation Isle of Dogs will be the top to its tail as closing night films, and it's bringing a whole pack of shorts, VR projects, extra titles, and the eagerly awaited Midnighters.

Closing out the fest (running March 9-18) Houston native and UT alum Anderson is making his first return to animation since 2009's Fantastic Mr. Fox with a massive voice cast (including Tilda Swinton, Edward Norton, Scarlett Johansson, Yoko Ono, and dozens more) in this tale of a near-future Japan where all the dogs have been exiled (and may be smarter than the people).

But back to that opening night slot: Robert Rodriguez may not have his next film, manga adaptation Alita: Battle Angel, quite ready to unleash yet, but he's giving SXSW participants the next best thing. The opening night party this year will be at his Troublemaker Studios, where badge holders will be able to party on the actual set of Iron City.

They're not the only directors with Austin roots in today's massive lineup drop: PJ Raval has his latest short, "Come and Take It," about the "cocks not Glocks" campus carry protest; Grow Up Tony Phillips creator Emily Hagins brings her new series Hold to Your Best Self; and the unstoppable force that is author/columnist/comedian/filmmaker Owen Egerton adds the Rooster Teeth-backed Blood Fest (the first of two films he has worked on this year) to the Midnighters programming.

Inevitably, that 10-film slab of gore and mayhem is eagerly awaited, and the roster won't disappoint. First up is Field Guide to Evil, the crowd-funded successor to the ABCs of Death series. Fans of Japanese genre cinema will be slavering for Katsuyuki Motohiro's live-action adaptation of bloodthirsty manga Ajin: Demi-Human, while the more refined and creepy British Ghost Story, starring Martin Freeman, makes its North American debut. Sorcerous mystery Hereditary comes out of Sundance with the reputation of being this year's break-out horror, à la The Witch or Get Out. Similarly, the untitled Untitled Blumhouse-Bazelevs Film may be under a shroud of mystery, but the last time Blumhouse had a new project in the Midnighters, it turned out to be summer smash Don't Breathe.

The vast majority of today's list is actually comprised of the shorts and music videos (including two blocks just for Texas filmmakers), but there's also a massive new emphasis on VR and the potential for immersive storytelling. That roster includes the first-ever mixed reality environment by art collective Meow Wolf, who are looking pretty ubiquitous (what with their documentary, Meow Wolf: Origin Story being part of the first round of titles).
