SXSW Adds Speakers, Films

Buzz Aldrin, Kesha, Cory Booker, Cecile Richards, and more

Get ready to party: 68 Kill, one of the SXSW Midnighters announced today.

From moon explorers to tech investors, musicians to Muppets, and from the joint chiefs of staff to the wrestling ring: SXSW just unleashed a monster wave of guests, speakers, and extra film titles for the upcoming Fest.

Having already announced speakers, including Lee Daniels and the Game of Thrones team, plus 125 films, and six catalogues of music, today's announcement swells their ranks.

Joining the keynote speaker list for the multi-pronged media cross-pollination event (running March 10-19) is Jessica Shortall, managing director of business coalition Texas Competes, which uses data to prove the value of LGBTQ inclusiveness. SXSW chief programming officer Hugh Forrest called her “a staunch advocate of equality, fairness, and decency. … At a time when human rights are front and center in the U.S. we think this message of inclusion will resonate not just through her keynote but throughout much of our conference programming, where it has emerged as a major theme.”

She’s just one of a schedule-busting swathe of additions, including Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood, singer-turned-activist Kesha, the creative teams behind Veep, Preacher, and Animals, genuine moon man Buzz Aldrin, Gawker founder Nick Denton, Planned Parenthood’s Cecilia Richards, and 16-time WWE champion John Cena. Plus, revving up the programming will be opening speaker Sen. Cory Booker, D-New Jersey, widely regarded as one of the new faces of the Democratic Party.

On the film side, SX finally adds the gruesome, thrilling, scary, and mind-warping Midnighters to their slate, with world premieres including Joe Lynch’s eagerly awaited follow-up to Everly, the Steven Yuen-fronted Mayhem, plus retrospective screenings of underground classics Behind the Mask: The Legend of Leslie Vernon, and Pig.

Elsewhere in the schedule, look for The Disaster Artist (James Franco’s retelling of the story behind cult smash The Room), and a long-awaited insight into the mind of a true leviathan of cinema, David Lynch - The Art Life.

The immersive world of VR also gets its biggest IRL presence at SX ever, breaking down borders with installations from Iran (Death Tolls Experience), Sudan (We Who Remain), and Niger (Women on the Move).
