The United Soccer League announced today that they've "granted permission for the Austin Aztex to not participate in the 2016 season due to the unavailability of a stadium that meets league standards" according to a team statement issued this afternoon. But the Aztex promise to be "back in full force and committed to returning for the 2017 season."
"This soccer city deserves a proper venue free of football lines, with amazing sightlines, and where a cold beer can be served on a hot summer night," the statement goes on, but progress toward "was hindered by the flooding that damaged House Park, forcing the Aztex to switch their focus to finding a suitable venue for the remainder of the 2015 USL season. We would also like to express our gratitude to AISD and RRISD for allowing us to use their facilities. However, these facilities have not proven to be economically viable solutions for our professional team."
"We want to thank our fans, season ticket holders, Eberly’s Army, and Aztex Originals for the support that was shown for this team throughout this season," the statement concludes. "As we work behind the scenes to secure a soccer friendly venue for 2017 and beyond, we invite you to join the cause by visiting www.StadiumForAustin.com and showing your support by registering with this website. Together, we can make this happen." See the full text of the United Soccer Leagues press release here.
