Aztex host Wilmington Hammerheads in US Open Cup

Could Be Raining Sharks at House Park Tonight

The USL-PRO Wilmington Hammerheads are in town tonight, the first pro team to play in Austin since 2010. They face the Austin Aztex in a U.S. Open Cup second round game. Kickoff is at 7:30pm at House Park, 13th & Lamar, rain or shine. And as always, pre- and post-game fan gatherings are at The Tavern.

The Hammerheads are just 2-5 thus far in their season, but they're coming off a good win Saturday over the Los Angeles Blues. Andres Cuero (Westlake High) spent 2011 and 2012 with them, after a stint with the original Aztex U-23s.

If the Aztex win tonight, they'll head to Oregon for a round-of-16 game against the MLS Portland Timbers, Wednesday, May 27 at historic Jeld-Wen Field. Last year, in the same round, the Timbers lost to the USASA upstart Cal FC, 1-0 in extra time, in front of 5,489 fans. (By then, the Aztex may be acclimated to that rainy Pacific Northwest weather; as I post this, the KVUE Weather forecast for tonight is: "evening showers and thunderstorms. Some storms could turn severe, producing large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes." The game is on, rain or shine, unless that would "endanger the safety of the participants and spectators.")

Before Portland, however, there's Saturday's game hosting the Laredo Heat, and that's a big one as well, with the early lead in the PDL Mid South Division in the balance, after both teams won this past weekend. The Aztex beat the Houston Dutch Lions 1-0 on Saturday, on first-half goal by defender Aaron Guillen, headed in off a Sito Seoane corner kick, headed on to Guillen by fellow defender Walker Hume. The Heat had won 2-0 on the road in Midland Friday night. These are likely again the top two teams in the Mid South division; an Aztex win would open a five-point gap between them.
That's Saturday, May 25, 7:30pm at House Park.
