Derby Update: Weekend of Champions

Texas Rollergirls and banked track TXRD both rolling for gold

Derby Update: Weekend of Champions

Roller derby fans, keep your eyes on the prizes this weekend. The Texas Rollergirls are warming up up in Lincoln, Neb. as they prepare to defend their regional gold, while the banked track bruisers of the Texas Roller Derby are at home readying for the league championships.

First, the Texecutioners: The Texas Rollergirl's travel team are defending their Women's Flat Track Derby Association South-Central Regional title. Their path starts tonight at 6pm when they face the winner of the opening bout between Omaha Rollergirls and the Tallahassee Rollergirls. As always, the smart money is on another Texas/Kansas City Roller Warriors championship bout on Sunday. And, yes, we know it's a bit of a walk to Nebraska, so if you can't make it you can watch the entire weekend - all 17 bouts – via WFTDA.TV.

If the Texies make it out of the tourney, they'll be heading to the WFTDA Grits and Glory Championship in Atlanta, Ga., on Nov. 2-4. There's already been a few big upsets in the other regions, like Windy City taking the top position in the North Central region, so this could be a volatile year.

If you're more a banked track kind of derby fan, then the Rhinestone Cowgirls will be defending the Calvello Cup against the resurgent Holy Rollers on Oct. 6 at the Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs. Doors 6pm, bout 7pm, tickets available now.
