Looks like Feb. 20 will be the perfect roller derby date night, Texas Rollergirls and the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls both holding bouts. But first, some quick words from Arizona.
Before the season even starts, TXRG has two big wins under its belt. First, the Hustlers won a hard-fought victory over the smash-and-bash style of Phoenix's Tent City Terrors (you can see how they were received, courtesy of the video above from KSAZ.) Then last weekend the Texecutioners returned from Beaumont with the 2011 Governor's Cup trophy, beating the Houston Roller Derby HaRD KNOCKS travel team.
But there's no laurel-resting. The flat track league's 2011 season starts Sunday, Feb. 20 at their new home at the Austin Convention Center. It's the traditional season-opening round robin (four teams, six bouts, no waiting,) which is a perfect time for new fans to learn about the sport. The bout starts at 5pm (doors 4.30pm.) Tickets are available now, and good news for families: Children under 12 get in free. Combine that with the early start and it's a family-friendly evening (although the afterparty at the Jackalope could get a little wilder.)
Check back here on The Score blog every day this week for interviews with team captains, coaches and players from each team about their plans for 2011.
It's a big banked track weekend as well: After their all-star year opener, the regular season starts at 7pm on Sunday, Feb. 20 at the Palmer Events Center with the Holy Rollers versus the Rhinestone Cowgirls. Tickets available now.
The Women's Flat Track Derby Association is looking for video production and broadcast partners for the nationwide 2011 "Big Five" tournaments. You can download the RFP here.
