Roller Derby Update, 5/8/10

Lonestar at home, Texecutioners for Denver double trouble

Roller Derby fans have a choice this weekend: Austin skaters playing banked track in Texas or flat track in Colorado? Either way, you can catch them courtesy of the Internet.

If you're on the banked track tip, the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls continue their home season as 2009 Calvello Cup champs the Hellcats take on the Holy Rollers. First whistle at 7pm tonight, May 8, at the Palmer Events Center (tickets $13 in advance, $15 in advance.) If you can't make it, then you can watch the live stream here. TXRD are also fundraising to make it out to California for Battle on the Bank III. The Lonestar girls hosted the national banked track tourney last year, and this time it's the San Diego Derby Dolls setting up the track.

If you're more inclined toward the flat track and want to catch the Texas Rollergirls' traveling squad, the Texecutioners, you might want to grab a quick flight to Denver, Colorado. Yes, the Texies have gone mile high for a double-header: Tonight the number one team in the Women's Flat Track Derby Association south central region face old rivals the Denver Roller Dolls (ranked #2 in the West, #3 in the nation) in an interleague extravaganza. The Austin squad face old rivals the Mile High Club, while Denver's JV team Bruising Altitude face Utah's O-Town Derby Dames. Sunday night, Texas follows that up with a private bout against Denver's other league, the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls (#3 in the west, #4 in the nation.) Last time Texas faced Rocky Mountain was at nationals, where the Texies beat them in the semis 139-82

If you can't make it up to Denver for tonight's bout, never fear: The whole event will be broadcast via Derby News Network, 7pm MDT, 8pm Central.
