Longhorns Opener Friday; Aztex on TV Sunday

The UT Longhorns open their season this Friday, hosting TCU at 7pm, Aug. 21. UT has never lost to TCU, and has a 26-game home unbeaten streak, dating back to 2006. The very young Horns will start four or five freshmen; two to watch: Brazilian-born and Chicago-raised Leah Fortune, who had UT's lone goal, and over half of the team's shots, in a 2-1 exhibition loss last Friday at LSU, and midfielder Sophie Campise, out of Dallas' Ursuline Academy. The Austin Aztex are on the road this week, but you can catch them on TV; the nationally televised game at the Montreal Impact is on Fox Soccer Channel, 2:30pm Sunday, Aug. 23. The Aztex played well last Sunday against Minnesota, taking the lead twice before giving up a very disappointing equalizer in the 89th minute and settling for a 2-2 draw.

It was the third straight home game that the Aztex have given up a deciding goal within the last two minutes... The team made a major roster move Wednesday, signing former FC Dallas defender Michael Dello-Russo for the rest of this season and the next two as well. The 26-year-old Dello-Russo captained the 2005 national champion Maryland Terrapins alongside new teammate A.J. Godbolt... Aztex affiliate Stoke City opened the EPL season with a 2-0 win Saturday over Burnley, then lost 4-0 at Liverpool Wednesday.

The Women's Pro Soccer championship game is this Saturday, Aug. 22, with the L.A. Sol hosting either New Jersey's Sky Blue FC or the St. Louis Athletica, who meet in the semifinal as we go to press Wednesday. The game's being televised live on Fox Sports Southwest, starting with a pregame show at 2:30pm and the game at 3pm. New Jersey upset the Washington Freedom, 2-1, to get into the semifinal.

The CONCACAF Champions League group stage started this Tuesday, with the Columbus Crew beating the Puerto Rico Islanders, 2-0, and Honduran champs Marathón beating DC United, 3-1.
