Crunch Time for the Aztex

By Nick Barbaro, June 3, 2009, 8:13pm, The Score

The Austin Aztex, coming off a 3-1 win over Puerto Rico last Friday, have three home games this week: regularly-scheduled USL-1 tilts Friday and Sunday against the second-place Charleston Battery, plus a first-round game in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tuesday evening, hosting the PDL Mississippi Brilla. June 5, 7, 9: Friday, 7pm; Sunday, 6pm; Tuesday, 7:30pm; Nelson Field, off Berkman, just north of U.S. 290. For more on the Aztex and the U.S. Open Cup, see "Crunch Time," Sports, June 5.

The Aztex U-23 squad has a home game in Bastrop this Thursday, hosting the Houston Leones at Bastrop Soccer Stadium, June 4, 7:30pm. A rough, emotional 2-2 draw last week against Rio Grande Valley has the Azteclets right in the middle of the very tight PDL Mid South Division.

In World Cup Qualifying, the U.S. is at Costa Rica as we go to press on Wednesday and hosts Honduras Saturday, June 6 (7pm, ESPN2); there are games in every other continent as well, on both June 6 and 10.

Chelsea won the FA Cup Final on Saturday, and Bordeaux won the French Ligue 1 title. And now the Euro club season is truly over.

Texas Athletics, in conjunction with the Aztex, announced Wednesday the first Copa Aztex, a match between Mexican clubs Tigres and Cruz Azul, will be played July 18 at UT's Mike A. Myers Stadium.
