The Austin Aztex are on the road this weekend in Montreal, after finishing their season-opening home stand with one win and three come-from-behind 1-1 draws, the latest against the defending regular-season champion Puerto Rico Islanders (see "Playing Through," May 15) in front of a raucous 5,216 fans. Once again, the Aztex suffered through the first half, with keeper Miguel Gallardo keeping them in it, before coming to life after the break, in large part due to Eddie Johnson's tireless runs and a gorgeous strike by Yordany Alvarez. As for the Montreal Impact game (as with all USL games), you can watch it for free online at www.usllive.com – 2:45pm Sunday, May 17.
Meanwhile, the amateur Aztex U-23 squad, playing in the Premier Development League as they did last year, got under way this week, with a loss and a draw on the road at Laredo and Houston, respectively; after a game in Waco as we go to press, the U-23s play their first home game at 7:30pm Friday, May 22, hosting the El Paso Patriots at Dragon Stadium in Round Rock (off Highway 29, just west of I-35). I haven't seen these Aztexlets play yet, but the very young roster is an attractive mix of local boys, some intriguing international talent, and a few holdovers from last year.
On Thursday, May 14, Austin police officers and firefighters will compete in the Austin's Heroes vs. Dobie's Heroes soccer game at Dobie Middle School, 1200 E. Rundberg. A total of 80 Dobie students will participate in the games, which will take place from 11am to 3:40pm.
Atlante won the CONCACAF Champions League title Tuesday night with a 2-0 aggregate win over Cruz Azul. Atlante had won the first leg in Mexico City before playing out a goalless draw on Tuesday in Cancún.
