The Austin Aztex are, amazingly, just a week away from opening their inaugural preseason against the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. The Revs arrive in Austin on Monday, Feb. 23, and train here on Tuesday through Friday before the game, Saturday, Feb. 28, 7:30pm, at Nelson Field. Monday is also the deadline for a couple of Aztex ticket packages, including tickets to the three MLS preseason games (Houston Dynamo March 7, Columbus Crew March 14). See www.austinaztex.com for details.
The Houston Dynamo open the 2009 season even sooner, hosting a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against Atlante of Mexico, Tuesday, Feb. 24, 9pm, at Robertson Stadium. Tickets through Ticketmaster; also shown live on Fox Soccer Channel. In fact, FSC will broadcast all eight CONCACAF quarterfinal games, Tuesday-Thursday, Feb. 24-26, and March 3-5 (full schedule below). Two of the Aztex USL-1 rivals are in the competition: the Montreal Impact and Puerto Rico Islanders.
European Champions League knockout stages begin Feb. 24-25 as well. ESPN2's games of the week: Manchester United at Inter Milan on Tuesday, Juventus at Chelsea Wednesday, both at 1:30pm.
Aztex affiliate Stoke City has a critical game Saturday, Feb. 21, hosting relegation rival Portsmouth; it's on FSC, delayed at 5:30pm.
