Brodown Corner

By Audra Schroeder, February 6, 2008, 3:09pm, The Score

This weekend offers more chances for high fives and male bonding than a damn Hold Steady concert. A mantage, if you will.

Friday, the Parlor and ILoveMikeLitt, the local group that brought us last year's veggie hot dog eating contest and veggie speed dating, present vegan arm wrestling. Now, we all know meat-eating has historically been an essential part of the drive to wear muscle tees and backward baseball caps and pound the roof of your Camaro with your fist during drum solos. But Austin's, like, an open-minded city, so there will be contests for carnivores and herbivores. In addition, locals Sex Advice, the Teeners, Sober Daze, and the Mysterious H bring some adrenaline-pumping, wrist-snapping punk rock. 8pm. Register at veganarmwrestling.com.

Saturday, head over to Club de Ville for Misprint Magazine's 2nd Annual Beard and Moustache contest. This year promises, well, let's leave it to a Misprint representative to explain: "Last year's contest was pretty fierce, so given that facial hair is now totally in, Saturday's contest will probably be the equivalent of the '88 Seoul Olympics, the Burr/Hamilton grudge match, and the 2nd and 4th Crusades all rolled into one."

One confirmed competitor is beard about town Allen Demling, who's running for City Council, but Misprint also embraces the dark horse entrants "who just show up, stoked on their beards and bearded lifestyles." There are subcategories for gnarliest beard, fiercest chops, and best groomed and, continuing with Misprint's "double standards and fear of girls," ladies are allowed to compete with fake facial hair. Or real, if that's how you roll. There will also be a "freestyle" competition.

If that wasn't enough, local faves Horse + Donkey, who do not have beards at press time, provide the soundtrack to your fur-filled fantasy. 10pm, $3.
