Beckham Debuts to Hollywood Royalty, and More

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wayne Gretzky, Kevin Garnett, John Hurt, Ray Winstone, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Brooke Shields, Eva Longoria, Simon Fuller, Wesley Snipes, Quincy Jones, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Vivica Fox, George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Katie Holmes, Sharon Stone, Drew Carey, and Jada Pinkett Smith were on hand to help celebrate David Beckham’s 12-minute debut for the L.A. Galaxy. And, no, that has nothing to do with soccer. Why on earth do you ask?

The Austin Lightning concluded their sodden season last weekend with a tense 2-1 loss to the DFW Tornados, “despite having to jump in the cars at the last minute and head for Dallas after all efforts to play the game in Austin were undone by the relentless and continuing thunderstorms in our area,” according to the team website. Following that game, the PDL reclassified the Lightning’s two previous rainouts as forfeit losses.

Argentina won the Under-20 World Cup Sunday in Toronto, beating the Czech Republic, 2-1, in the final.

After a couple of semifinal upsets, it’ll be Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia in the Asian Cup final this Sunday in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Saudis knocked off two-time defending champion Japan, 3-2, on Wednesday, while Iraq beat South Korea in a penalty-kick shoot-out.
