Cannes prize-winners and world premieres are part of the first round of films announced for this year's Austin Film Festival.
AFF (running Oct. 24-31) has already announced big names for the Writers Conference programming, including Star Wars head honcho Kathleen Kennedy, Battlestar Galactica reviver Ronald D. Moore, Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo (best known as the creative duo behind Shōgun) and Craig Mazin (famous as the showrunner for The Last of Us and as Ted Cruz’s unfortunate college roommate). Now the film side of the fest fills out with some big-name additions.
That starts with the local premiere of the winner of this year’s Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes, Beijing-born director Guan Hu's The Black Dog. That’s not the only award it picked up, as star Xin won the Palm Dog Woopets Grand Jury Prize – an award given by critics to the festival’s best canine performance. The drama, set in a remote part of the Gobi desert, focuses on a formerly incarcerated man (Eddie Peng) who returns home to find that nature is taking over the town he grew up in.
AFF will also have its share of world, North American, and U.S. premieres. This includes the debut of Shaman, the new chiller from the Negret brothers, director Antonio (The Lincoln Lawyer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and first-time scriptwriter Daniel, who proved his horror credentials as producer of Possessor and Talk to Me.
The festival will also give audiences a chance to catch movies on the big screen before they head to their permanent streaming home. That includes a special showing of The Piano Lesson, Netflix’s adaptation of August Wilson’s 1987 Pulitzer-winning play, starring Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Erykah Badu, and Corey Hawkins.
Expect the rest of this year's 100 films to be announced in late September, but for now here's those first 10 movies.
