First Look: Snapchat's Lago Vista

By Avery Wohleb, June 30, 2021, 9:00am, Picture in Picture

When people think of Snapchat, it's not usually as a place for sharing narratives. It’s mostly used as a platform for sending pictures and videos – all the tools necessary for storytelling. So why not make it both? On July 5, Snapchat releases Lago Vista, a new Snap Original series focusing on what it means to be a teenager in Lago Vista, Texas.

The 30-episode docu-soap, filmed earlier this year, will be told through the perspective of Snapchats taken by a group of seven high school seniors and recent graduates in the Hill Country community, just west of Austin. Each friend documents their lives within the pictures, videos and calls they send and have with one other. Their stories consist of sports, school and relationships, and all of the teenage drama in-between. However, unlike other teen drama shows, Lago Vista is brought together with the authenticity of how many young adults actually communicate in the real world.

Produced by GoodStory Entertainment, Lago Vista will air exclusively on Snapchat Discover. Over the span of nine weeks, new 5-minute episodes will be released every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Watch the trailer here:

The trailer suggests that Lago Vista aims to emphasize the realities of being an All-American teen in the age of social media. Episodes will cover topics such as gender identity, academic anxiety and unrequited love, all told through the eyes of the young and impressionable group experiencing it for themselves. While some characters are enjoying the finality of their senior year in high school, others are navigating college life for the first time. Either way, they all seem to rely on each other for support, life lessons and, at the very depth of their stories, the value of their friendships together.
