Now Streaming in Austin: "Death Metal"

Welcome to Now Streaming in Austin, highlighting locally made titles to watch while self-quarantining.
So big news today for the Austin horror scene, after streaming terror experts Shudder acquired the locally-made shrieks-and-laughter anthology Scare Package. So we thought we'd give you a taste of the bloody fun.

One of the stand-out segments at screenings so far has been Chris McInroy's serial-killer/creature-in-the-woods splatter gigglefest "One Time In The Woods," but it's far from the first time we've seen the filmmaker deploy his trademark taste for gore.

Back in 2016, he cranked up the power for "Death Metal," a hilariously grisly and wonderfully tasteless story of a of a lousy guitarist (The Unicorn codirector Kirk Johnson) who inherits a truly evil guitar that leads to ... well, if you didn't hate buskers before, you will when you see the carnage him and his malevolent musical instrument wreak on a series of unsuspecting Austin regulars including Johnson's long-time collaborator Will Elliott, Sam Eidson (Zero Charisma), and Christina Parrish (Call Me Brother). Plus, when it comes to decapitations, disembowelings, and blood spray galore, let's just say that McInroy kept FX expert Eric Zapata and his team busy.

You'll be able to see more of McInroy's work - and that of a bunch of Austin filmmakers including Emily Hagins and Aaron B. Koontz - in Scare Package when it launches on Shudder in June (read more about that right here), but for now you can thrash out to McInroy's trademark gross comedy.
