Now Streaming in Austin: "Skip Day"

By Richard Whittaker, April 19, 2020, 3:11pm, Picture in Picture

Welcome to Now Streaming in Austin, highlighting locally made titles to watch while self-quarantining.
Filmmakers Ivete Lucas and Patrick Bresnan may be based out of Austin, but as documentarians they've become associated with the small Florida town of Pahokee.

The Best of Austin-winning duo's new feature documentary – suitably titled Pahokee – arrives next weekend at the AFS Cinema as part of their virtual cinema programming. But they first applied their immersive, observational techniques to showing the community back in 2016 with "The Send Off," capturing prom night prep and the liberation of the big night for high schoolers in this rural/industrial community. They went a little further out into the surrounding swamplands for their followup, "The Rabbit Hunt," before examining the impact of Airforce One (and the newly-sworn-in President Trump) being the focus of interest at Palm Beach International Airport in "Roadside Attraction."

But today we're highlighting their most recent short, both a teaser for Pahokee and a sequel of sorts to "The Send Off." In Pahokee, skip day is the Monday after prom, when seniors ditch class and head to the coast to hang, talk about their future, and generally just enjoy doing nothing before college – or whatever the future holds.

Pahokee opens nationally and locally at AFS Cinema as a virtual cinema release on April 24. We'll have a full review in this week's digital issue.
