For the last five years, Other Worlds Austin has explored visions of the future and expanded horizons as the region's preeminent science fiction film festival. For its sixth outing, it returns with a fresh new look, a familiar home and the same promise of vision-expanding cinema.
Founded in 2014, Other Worlds has been dedicated to spotlighting new genre titles like the award-winning Embers and the action-heavy Beyond Skyline, as well as repertory screenings of beloved titles like Battle Beyond the Stars. It also added a dedicated horror-tinged substrand in the Underworld programming, which gave Austin audiences a first glimpse of shockers like the upcoming supernatural crime-drama fusion I'll Take Your Dead. Festival founder Bears Rebecca Fonté announced this week that the festival – now rebranded as simply Other Worlds and with a new logo by design firm the Label Collective – will be return on Dec. 5 for four days of the best of international, classic and cutting edge SF films.

That was its home for the first two years (2014-15), before the fest began a three year run at Flix Brewhouse in Round Rock. However, with the recent renovations at Galaxy, Other Worlds will be moving back, starting this year, and adding a third theater. Fonté said, “We will now be able to offer repeat viewings of the most popular films as well as the always popular shorts programs."
Not only will the main festival be relocating back to Galaxy, but so will the year-round Orbiter series, designed to give audiences a chance to catch movies that are either getting a release before the main festival, or that slipped through the booking net. Previous titles have included surprise cult successes like Dave Made a Maze and Director's Commentary: Terror of Frankenstein.
But for all the changes, Fonté promises that the fest will remain the same at heart: "For four days in December, our fans escape the real world and immerse themselves in creative visions from around the globe."
Other Worlds 2019 runs Dec. 5-8 at Galaxy Highland: Badges and passes go on sale June 1 at www.otherworldsaustin.com.
