As e-sports continues to grow beyond its insulated walls and make its way into the consciousness of the uninitiated SXSW does what it does best: sees the trend and capitalizes. In this case they’re bringing e-sports pros to town for some top-tier Halo play.
SXSW announced today that it will host the Halo Championship Series Invitational over the gaming expo’s three days. The top six teams from the recent Halo Classic will compete in a double-elimination tournament with the prize totals coming to a whopping $100,000. There will also be a chance for some local Halo experts to face off against the pros in a 2v2 Throwdown. If your first-person-shooting skills are not quite on that level, you can join the free-for-all tourney with $5,000 awaiting the best of the non-pro bunch.
This is all in addition to the usual expo antics, featured speakers, awards show, and other video-game goodness taking place Friday-Sunday, March 15-17, at the Austin Convention Center.
If all of this just sounds too good to be true, wait, there’s more! Today, and only today (Tuesday, January 22), the price of three-day SXSW Gaming wristbands are on sale for $29 (down from $39). That’s only $9 more than a one-day pass. An actual video game is gonna cost you more. We're just sayin'.
