Texas Film Awards Announce More Stars

By Richard Whittaker, March 5, 2018, 4:00pm, Picture in Picture

The Texas Film Awards have just added a little more star power to this week’s already glittering award ceremony. Armie Hammer will receive his Variety One to Acclaim award from his Call Me by Your Name co-star Timothée Chalamet, while Thandie Newton will present Paul Thomas Anderson with the inaugural Jonathan Demme Award.

Newton is one of many performers whose careers intersected with the late, great Demme, having worked with him on both The Truth About Charlie and Beloved. However, PTA won’t be able to escape the stage after he gets his prize. AFS has announced that Richard Linklater (taking a break from prepping his untitled 1960s NASA drama) will sit down with the Phantom Thread director for what promises to be an unmissable conversation. (For more on Anderson's own friendship with Demme, read this week's issue.)

If that wasn't enough, for the big spenders (and this is, after all, one of AFS's big fundraisers for the year), the Variety panel at the award brunch on March 7 has added not only Linklater, but also actress Regina Hall, who will be in town for the premiere of a film by another Austin director: Andrew Bujalksi, whose "breasteraunt" comedy Support the Girls will debut at SXSW.

The TFA ceremony takes place March 8 at the AFS Cinema. Tickets still available at www.austinfilm.org/tfa.
