Get Out Wins Austin Critics Top Prize

Austin's reputation as a film town friendly to cinema was proven again today as the Austin Film Critics Association announced that social horror Get Out has won its best film award, while director Jordan Peele won the prize for best first film and best original screenplay.

That's not the only genre film that took the association's honors. Guillermo del Toro's fantastical allegory The Shape of Water leads the list of top 10 films (a ranking collated from members' own lists, separate to voting process for the best film category). In further good news for del Toro, he also won best director.

However, he was not the only multi-time winner. Timothée Chalamet took not only the best actor award for his role in Call Me by Your Name, but also takes the Robert R. “Bobby” McCurdy Memorial Breakthrough Artist Award, named after the late co-founder of the AFCA.
